A note at this point is probably deserved - paradoxically, the more I do, the less inclination I have to write about it. So, things that have happened since my last entry include:
- Going back home for the weekend to attend my grandmother's funeral. As has become traditional for me now, I spoke at the actual service - I wrote and gave the eulogy, although my mother provided some of the requisite biographical details. I also had a home cooked meal, and on Sunday, dim sum with my parents. The movie on the plane was Blue Crush.
- I did an "emergency" Ex-Parte Appearance in Marin, which was interesting. I thought the most stressful part was getting there, though - what with the rain and flooding on the way there.
- Dickens Faire ended, on a bit of an anti-climax for me. My parents attended, having come from Hawaii for their holiday. I gave my "new" lecture, participated in a few exchanges, and shopped a bit.
- Pre-Christmas and Christmas. A sedate time - several good meals, planning futures, a bit of stress over the applications, two of which were mailed on Christmas Eve. Some shopping, but the earmuffs I wanted were sold out. (Already! And in San Francisco, where it doesn't even snow!) Still, I was pleased to discover that one of my favorite icons has yet more in common with me - she likes to eat, and asks a lot of questions.
Christmas Day included the Korean film The Way Home, which while sentimental, featured a kindly grandmother, which allowed me to think more about my own. I have difficulty experiencing or expressing grief. It does, however, make me a good stoic.
- Las Vegas. Overall, a successful experience - three spas, one of which I dragged my mother to. (She did, in the end, seem to enjoy it.) Plus, I went to two shows - Cheval, a horse-based show by the Cirque do Soleil impresario and the gloriously kistch Tournament of Kings, recommended for the whole Cornish game hen served without utensils (I do like eating without them, it makes food a more immediate experience) and the re-working of traditional songs. (I recognized "Chevalier du la Table Ronde.") I also "won" a small stuffed animal by being five years younger than my ages as guessed by the "Jester."
- Back to work, and more assignments. A friend arrived for a few days, and I was able to get him to a New Year's Party with some other dear friends of mine. I wasn't able to go, due to the new assignments (see above), but meditated through the turning of the year, then went to sleep. A sign of things to come? Perhaps.
Ahead, I have a stint at zen center, eye surgery, a trip to Minnesota (in winter!), and possibly, more travel and visits. I also have to start divesting myself of all of my worldly goods, so if you know me, and have been looking for a table, desk, etc., now's the time to ask. Until then -
